Solicitation for prostitution,
often referred to simply as
solicitation, is considered a
sex crime in most states
and involves the act of
asking for or encouraging
the exchange of sexual
services for money. The
penalties associated with
solicitation charges vary
from state-to-state. Some
states prosecute solicitation
vigorously and may
potentially include jail time,
mandatory registration as a
sex offender, community
service, and more.
Not every state includes prostitution as a
sex offense that requires putting someone
on the list. But for those that do, the result
is simply undue cruelty. As if the life of a
woman so desperate that she has to resort
to street prostitution isn't bad enough, we
need to make them suffer even more?
That's barbaric.

Another Problem With Sex Offender Lists

Caught carrying 3 condoms in D.C. and you may be arrested for prostitution
|
According to a slue of published reports, D.
C. now has a new law that says if you
happen to be in an area of D.C. deemed a
P.F.Z., Prostitution Free Zone (no that’s
not where the hookers are giving their
services away for free), then that is
probable cause to assume you’re a lady of
the evening.

Convicted Sex Workers Must Register as Sex Offenders
|
Adding to the long list of weird American
sex laws, Louisiana — along with eight
other states — has a crime-against-nature
law. It's an unused, archaic law in most
places, but New Orleans has been
reinterpreting the 200-year-old law for its
own purposes. The city now defines
"unnatural copulation" as anal or oral sex
and uses it to brand convicted sex workers
with the title "sex offender."
Of the 861 registered sex offenders in
New Orleans, 483 were convicted of
crimes against nature, and 78 percent of
those are black and almost all are women.
What's that mean for them? There's a
stamp printed on their driver's licenses,
labeling them as sex offenders. They can't
get food stamps or public assistance,
much less jobs, and if there's a hurricane
they need to go to special shelters
reserved for sex offenders. They can't
even dress up for Mardi Gras!
And guess what happens when a person
can't get a job or public assistance, New
Orleans? Probably something illegal like
prostitution!

Should John's be Considered Sex Offenders
|
The Kansas House has passed a bill that
would put anybody who hires a prostitute
on the sex-offender registry for 10 years,
David Klepper reports. On the hand, it is a
crime involving sex, but some are arguing
that prostitution is different from pedophilia
or rape because the "other party" is often
consenting -- except when they've been
forced into the sex trade. Legislators hope
that upping the punishment will reduce the
demand for prostitutes.

Tabitha has been working as a prostitute
since she was 13. Now 30 years old, police
and the district attorney’s office are using
a state law written for child molesters to
charge hundreds of sex workers like
Tabitha as sex offenders.
Miranda was 13 and a prostitute. She has
no home, no real friends and no family.
She's up against a legal system that will
hurt her before it helps her.
